What do oligotrophic, mesotrophic and eutrophic mean?
A lake’s trophic status describes its long-term biological productivity—how much algae and aquatic plant growth its nutrients support. It is not a simple “clean” or “dirty” grade, and it is not a same-day swimming-safety test. NHDES evaluates indicators that include chlorophyll-a, aquatic vegetation, Secchi-disk clarity and dissolved oxygen.
Oligotrophic
Relatively low nutrients and low biological productivity. These lakes are often clearer and have less algae and aquatic plant growth. Deeper water generally retains more oxygen, which can benefit cold-water fish where depth and temperature are also suitable.
Mesotrophic
Moderate nutrients, algae and aquatic vegetation, with intermediate clarity. Depending on depth, temperature and seasonal conditions, oxygen may decline in deeper water during summer. “Mesotrophic” does not mean half clean or half polluted.
Eutrophic
Higher nutrients and biological productivity, often with more algae and vegetation and lower clarity. Decomposition can consume deep-water oxygen. Some lakes are naturally eutrophic; human nutrient inputs can also accelerate productivity.
Four different water-quality questions
A lake cannot be responsibly reduced to one “cleanliness score.” These measurements answer different questions, may apply to different locations and can be updated on different schedules.
Trophic status
Describes broader ecological productivity. The classification may come from a survey completed years ago, so the directory shows linked survey and monitoring years when NHDES provides them.
Freshwater bacteria
NHDES uses E. coli at monitored freshwater beaches. A sample or advisory applies to that beach and sampling period—not automatically to the entire lake, every cove or every day.
Cyanobacteria
Bloom watches and warnings can change quickly. Cyanobacteria occur naturally, but some blooms can create health risks for people and animals. Always consult the current state mapper.
Formal impairment
A Clean Water Act assessment is parameter- and use-specific. A segment may be impaired for one pollutant or use while meeting standards—or lacking enough information—for another.

Water quality is one part of a lake-property decision. A strong review connects the lake record to the exact property, shoreline rights, systems, insurance and your intended use.
Before an offer
- Check current bacteria and cyanobacteria advisories.
- Confirm whether waterfront, deeded access and shared beach rights are legally documented.
- Ask about septic design, location, age and protected-shoreland transfer requirements.
- Review flood maps, insurance quotes, private-road and association costs.
For long-term ownership
- Review phosphorus, clarity, chlorophyll and oxygen trends in available reports.
- Check invasive-species records and lake-association management efforts.
- Investigate dock, shoreline and vegetation permits before assuming changes are allowed.
- Consider winter access, water-level changes, boat traffic and future resale.
Frequently asked questions
Does oligotrophic mean a lake is safe to swim in?
No. Oligotrophic describes low nutrient levels and biological productivity. It does not prove that a particular beach is free of elevated bacteria or that no cyanobacteria bloom is present. Check current advisories and local conditions.
Why can bacteria results differ around the same lake?
Samples represent a specific place and time. Rainfall, wildlife, runoff, septic problems, currents and local conditions can affect one beach or cove differently from another. A beach advisory should not be silently expanded to the entire lake.
Why are some trophic surveys old?
Trophic class is intended to describe longer-term lake productivity, and not every waterbody is surveyed every year. Where available, the directory links both historic trophic surveys and more recent volunteer monitoring reports so readers can review trends rather than one label.
Does “no report found” mean the water is clean?
No. It means this statewide source does not show the specific report. Some waters are monitored by local governments, lake associations or other programs; many locations are not routinely sampled. Missing data should never be converted into a safety claim.
What kind of history appears in each lake record?
The expanded directory record summarizes documented monitoring history: available trophic survey years, volunteer reports, cyanobacteria records, ice-out links and invasive-species discoveries. Cultural history is not available in one consistent statewide official dataset, so this guide does not invent local lore.
Data sources and methodology
This guide loads named lake, pond and impoundment records directly from the NHDES Lake Information Mapper, then cautiously matches waterbody IDs to the current Healthy Swimming feeds and 2026 impairment layer. Records may include separate bays or monitoring segments. NHDES says its data are continually revised, intended for screening and subject to verification. The directory preserves “Not determined” and missing fields rather than guessing.
